Senators contrast their approach to cybersecurity with Egyptian crackdown.Senators Joe Lieberman (I-Conn.), Susan Collins (R-Maine), and Thomas Carper (D-Del.) issued a statement Tuesday again denying the cybersecurity bill they introduced last year gives the president the authority to shut down the Internet in a manner comparable to the recent censorship by the Egyptian government. “We would never sign on to legislation that authorized the President, or anyone else, to shut down the Internet. Emergency or no, the exercise of such broad authority would be an affront to our Constitution,” the Senators said.Egypt restored Internet access on Wednesday after cutting off communications for a week amidst ongoing political protests against the regime of President Hosni Mubarak. The Senators called his actions “totally wrong,” one day after a committee spokesman decried any link between the bill and Egypt.”Some have suggested that our legislation would empower the President to deny U.S. citizens access to the Internet. Nothing could be further from the truth,” they continued before re-iterating their argument that the White House already claims nearly unchecked authority to shut down communications networks under the Communications Act of 1934.CRITICS STILL NOT CONVINCED: “We understand that protecting Internet communications is a vital government interest, but we’re troubled by the idea that the president could declare an emergency and shut down digital communications. In its current form, the legislation offers no clear means to check that power,” said Free Press Action Fund campaign director Timothy Karr.
